One of the things that I love to create is cotton dish cloths. These can easily be crocheted in an hour (or a few hours) if you are a beginner. You can create these for gifts or just for your own use. They hold up well, withstand multiple washings, and last a long time.
When making them, I prefer to use a cotton yarn. This makes them much more durable, and will hold up to going through a hot wash cycle with a little bleach and detergent to clean them. Some of my dish cloths I have had for almost a decade. I use them for everything from washing dishes to cleaning counters. Plus, when you make these, you only need to know how to do 2 stitches: a chain and a single crochet stitch.
The brand of yarn I prefer using is Sugar ‘n Cream 100% cotton yarn. It is a worsted 4-ply yarn. It is one that is readily available at my local Wal-Mart and at the craft stores where I purchase my fabrics and craft supplies.
The great thing about making your own dish cloths is that you can make them the size that you want them. If you prefer a smaller one, you can do that. If you prefer a larger one, you can do that. Any size will do. You just need to remember that however many chains you make, that will be the size.
The package for the yarn suggests an H crochet hook, but I use an I for mine. This is because I know that I am going to wash mine in hot water and dry it. This will cause the cotton fibers to shrink together. I also do not count my rows. I just know where I want to stop.
For different variations, you can chain stitches at the end to create a hanging loop, or you can crochet a hanging loop to sew onto the dish cloth.
Quick Crochet Cotton Dish Cloth
Chain 40.
Insert hook into 2nd chain from hook and SC across.
Chain 1, Turn and SC across. Repeat for 40 rows or until dish cloth is the length you want it to be. Tie off and weave in the tail.
